Are Addiction and Compulsive Behaviors Controlling Your Life?

Does it feel as though there is something missing in your life, and only certain substances or behaviors help to fill or numb that void? Are you stuck in a cycle of drinking, using drugs, over-eating, shopping, exercising or engaging in another activity that brings you temporary satisfaction, but no long-term relief? Maybe it’s hard for you to focus, especially if you find yourself perpetually planning the next time you can indulge in the addictive behavior. It may be that friends and family members have expressed their concern, and now you take extra steps to hide your behaviors, including lying to the people you love most. You may feel exhausted by and ashamed of the demands of living a double life. Or, perhaps you’ve been caught or the behaviors have led to serious consequences – such as the loss of a job or relationship, an arrest or mounting financial debt – and now you know you have to make a change, but fear that you don’t know how to live without the substances or behaviors. Addiction takes many forms, and whether you’re struggling with alcohol, drug use, overeating, shopping, gambling or something else, you are not alone. Addiction is common – so common, in fact, that our modern American culture has normalized many activities that could and very often do develop into addiction. For example, media and advertisements encourage us to shop at every turn. We receive countless messages that alcohol is a normal part of socializing or relaxation. For many of us, it can be difficult to recognize the signs of addiction and even more difficult to break out of the cycle we’ve found ourselves stuck in.

At the root of addiction is a sense of emptiness. When we discover a substance or behavior that seems to soothe that emptiness, even for a short while, it’s understandable that we return to it again and again, searching for relief in the only way we know how. In addition, so many of us believe that we’re not worthy or not good enough, leading us to search out ways to numb or push down those feelings. Our thoughts are powerful, and negative, self-limiting thoughts can have a profound impact on our emotions and actions. They can stay deep in the body – just below conscious awareness – dictating our choices and compromising our happiness, fulfillment and personal freedom. Addiction is not your fault; you are doing the best you can with the knowledge and resources you have. And, thankfully, recovery from addiction is possible. With my support and guidance through addiction counseling, you can transform negative thoughts, learn effective ways to govern your own life and discover what you truly need to live as your most fulfilled, connected and empowered self.

These resources lie below conscious awareness, too often pushed down by the stresses, pains and challenges of life. My proprietary Soul-Centered Breathwork® practice releases those limiting patterns from a cellular level, enabling you to access new strength and motivation. With dedication and a willingness to engage in honest self-reflection, you can gain a greater understanding of how your brain works, tap into your inner resources, replace negative thoughts with life-affirming thoughts and begin to feel safe, loved and empowered to be who you truly are.

From both personal and professional experience, I know how painful struggling with addiction can be. I also know that we live in an abundant universe, and there is always hope to discover your individual path to a rich and rewarding life. Addiction does not define who you are. Drinking, taking drugs or engaging in a compulsive behavior is a choice you make every day, even though it might not feel like it. I believe you have the innate strength to make different choices. Your thoughts, words and actions have so much power, and you truly do have the inner wisdom needed to enact change in your life. Addiction treatment can help you reclaim your personal power. With commitment, practice and patience, you can enter into a new reality that serves you and create a life of abundance, peace and happiness.

I want to achieve recovery from addiction as quickly as possible. How long does this take? 

As someone who has struggled with and healed from addiction, I understand your desire to be free of this pain as soon as you can. In sessions, I create a safe space for you to experience compassion for yourself and come to understand that you deserve all the time you need to truly heal. You deserve to take care of yourself and get to know yourself in a new way. That said, my approach is highly effective, and this therapy process can help you create lasting change more quickly than most. Although healing is not far off, I encourage you to allow yourself the time you need to process your experience and treat yourself with care and gentleness.

I don’t have the money for addiction treatment.

I invite you to consider how much struggling with addiction may have already cost you, whether in finances, relationships or sense of self. So many of us do not learn the value of investing in and taking care of ourselves. As an addiction counselor, I can help you recognize how the belief that you are not worth personal investment is likely one of the thoughts at the root of your current challenges. In truth, you are worth it!

I’m not sure I’m really struggling with addiction. So many people engage in the same behaviors that I do, and I’m getting through each day.

So many of us diminish the cries for help coming from within.
